He was not born naturally nor active during the previous era; instead, he manifested from the faith of Meracydian dragons and their followers, coerced by the Allagan Empire. This convergence of emotion created a Primal capable of unleashing the Megaflare, an attack potent enough to wipe out civilization instantly. Unlike lesser summons, Bahamut retains a degree of sentience and memory tied to his summoners' desires. He views humanity as cattle to be culled for the sake of a new order. However, lore suggests that Primals are not eternal; they fade when their faith is broken. The Warrior of Light's victory over him demonstrated that even gods can fall if the belief sustaining them is severed. In later eras, connections were drawn between this Eorzean Bahamut and ancient dragon deities from before the Shattering. However, there is no canonical evidence to support the claim that he is a reincarnation or echo of an original god of destruction spanning multiple shards. Contrary to rumors, there was no separate 'counterpart' Primal Bahamut in the First during Shadowbringers; the dragon conflicts there were tied to Zodiark and the Ascians.
